First Cruise Back: Carnival Magic Christmas Cruise

Image
Like many, we accumulated future cruise credits during the shutdown that we needed to use.   Finding a time that our entire family could travel, however, was a bit of a challenge, but we eventually settled on Christmas break and booked a 7-night cruise on the Carnival Magic.  This year, we would spend Christmas at sea! Being our first cruise in nearly 2 years, we were super excited to be back on board, but also a little apprehensive about COVID protocols.   There were six of us, my husband and I, our 3 teenage boys, plus our German exchange student.  My in-laws were also joining us.  We were all fully vaccinated, and had rapid antigen tests the day before we left for Port Canaveral. Embarkation Day: My son was in a wedding the day before the sailing, so we left that evening and made the 12 hour drive through the night, arriving around 9am.  We made our way to Park Port Canaveral (I had a promo code and we ended up paying just under $70 to park for the week!), got a sweet spot, unloade

Resort Report: Margaritaville Hollywood Beach

For my husband's birthday, I wanted to plan a little getaway for some much needed R&R, somewhere warm and sunny with a beach and nice pools to lounge by and sip fruity drinks.  After scoring some cheap flights to Fort Lauderdale, I settled on Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, and we were not disappointed! This 369-room property is situated on the legendary Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, with gorgeous ocean views of the Atlantic on one side, and spectacular sunset views of the Intracoastal on the other.  The vibe is casual-coastal inspired, well-themed and what you would expect from the Margaritaville brand without being over the top.  We arrived very early, before 11am, and were able to store our bags and explore the resort until our room was ready.  The lobby is gorgeous, with plenty of seating areas, a coffee shop and gift shop. We headed across the street for some lunch at Le Tub, a popular waterfront hangout offering world-famous burgers.  As we were walking back, we were

Trip Report: Long Weekend Getaway to Savannah

Oh Savannah, you are a treasure! What to do for spring break?   We had a few days off and were itching to hit the road.   After a lovely visit to Charleston last October, we decided to return to the low country on a food, culture and history tour of Savannah. We arrived on Thursday, just in time for lunch at Paula Deen's Creek House, located 10 minutes from downtown Savannah with lovely views of Turner Creek.  After warming up our taste buds with shrimp po' boys and crab cake sandwiches, we were off to explore nearby Bonaventure Cemetery.   Having just reread Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, we were eager to hunt down Johnny Mercer's grave, as well as a few other famous resting spots.   The cemetery is lovely and tranquil, with a canopy of moss-draped live oaks and bursting with azaleas and other blooming plants.  We parked along one of the unpaved roads that traverse the grounds and set out on foot for a self-guided tour, however guided tours are available.  After
